Sparring for TKD & BJJ
Sparring is the pressure test that our students undergo to learn how to use the techniques we teach them practically. Charter school programs do not participate in striking-based sparring, only jiu-jitsu non-submission-based sparring. This is another reason why getting your child to the studio is important and highly recommended so that they get an understanding of the contact part of their belt test.
TKD Sparring: The Taekwondo sparring part of their test will consist of low-level body-only contact. It is an opportunity for them to test their self-defense skills in a safe environment, with protective gear, for a limited duration of time.
BJJ Sparring: The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu part of their test consists of defending from certain set positions, and a 1-3 minute round of non-submission-based sparring.
1-Month Free
As a participant in our Charter school program, your student has shown enough leadership, and focus to be invited to continue their training. Our offer for students to train for about a month is to allow students to attend as many classes as possible to prepare for their belt testing. We do not expect students to participate in every class, but we do encourage you to take advantage of as many days as you can. Students who already train at a martial arts academy will be allowed to attend the belt test, regardless of studio attendance. Students who are not already enrolled at a martial arts school will not be allowed to attend belt tests without at least some attendance at DMA. (This is to make sure your students are prepared for the belt test)
Belt Test Requirements
Depending on the amount of training, Most charter school participants are right at their yellow belt.
2 tips or more on their belt
TKD Combinations 1-5
TKD Basic Strikes & Blocks
BJJ: Trap and Roll 1-3 (basic, 2-on-one, wrist pin, prone)
Guard Recovery: Hip Escape to close guard.
Back Take: Seat belt control.
TKD Sparing 1-min
BJJ Grappling 1-min rounds
It is important to remember that your students have already been tested. Our belt test is not to throw them to the wolves, but simply a pressure test to test them on the knowledge they have gained over time.
Questions - Comments - Concerns
“My kid already trains at the Charter school, why do they need more?”
Answer: Our charter school program covers the basics of self-defense, but it is a stripped-down version of our in-house curriculum. Our charter school curriculum covers a lot less over a longer period of time because we don’t see the students as often. Having your student attend in studio classes would allow them to level up quickly, and bridge the gap in their knowledge.
“I’m hesitant for my child to spar, why do they have to do that to test?”
Not everyone is a fighter, and we recognize that. Our belt test does include sparring but it also includes memory of our character traits, Jiu-Jitsu-based grappling, and demonstration of our combinations. We ask our students all the time, when are they tested, and the answer is every day. We have been watching your students over the years and we wouldn’t invite them unless we felt as though they could handle it.
We have sparring days every Wednesday (TKD) , and Friday (BJJ), we encourage you to bring your student to as many days as possible to get experience sparring but also to help manage any fear, doubt, and hesitation. *All students wear protective gear, including helmets, chest pads, shin/arm guards, gloves and foot protectors, and mouthpieces.
“What’s the cost? There’s always a cost.”
Answer: There is no cost to train during the 30-day period, but there is a testing fee when they come to test for their next belt. Testing fees are for all students, DMA Members, and non-members alike.
“Break it down for me, What’s the criteria, How does it all work?.”
Answer: For our charter school participants, we only have about 10 spots available. All students will have a tip test to get a black tip on their belts to show growth and advancement. Students invited to the belt test must have already passed a tip test with ease. The tip test is held at their school site, during their normal TKD class. Students in 3rd grade or less, or who may be in 4th or 5th grade but have not been invited to belt test.
“I have multiple students, and one didn’t receive an invite. What is the criteria to receive an invitation?”
Answer
Pass the School Tip Advancement Test.
TKD: Combinations 1-5,
BJJ: Basic Hip Escape, Trap & Roll Variations (1-3)
Mount, Closed Guard, Side Control Positions.
This invitation is extended to charter school programs for 2 grade and up.Unless otherwise announced.
